Pet Passports and the Rabies injection
Recent legislation has significantly simplified the PETS Passport which allows the movement of your pet within the EU.
The conditions to obtain a passport are as follows:
-
- Insertion of a valid microchip (some old
microchips or some inserted by pet charities are not recognised).
- One rabies vaccination.
- Your pet should not leave or re-enter the UK until 21days after the rabies vaccination.
- A Tapeworm treatment is required before re-entry into the UK and must be given 1-5 days prior to your return (Note this may well be before you leave!).
Approximate total cost: £78 inc. microchip.
The PETS Passport is only valid until the date
that the rabies booster is due. For animals resident in foreign countries, especially parts
of Europe, annual rabies boosters are required. Some non-EU
countries allow entry on a passport, but may require an annual
rabies vaccination. Specific advice on entry into Non EU
countries, and for clients wishing to spend prolonged periods
of time abroad can be obtained from the PETS helpline 0870 2411710. Often for non-EU countries additional
export papers are required, which need to be applied for from
Defra.
Travel abroad exposes your pet to diseases not normally present in the UK. For advice on how to best manage these risks please contact the surgery.
