Out of Hours / Emergency Registered Veterinary Nurse Position

About Us

Cedar Vets is an independent practice with over 130 years of history, built on a foundation of genuine care and lasting relationships. We’re known for combining high clinical standards with a supportive, collaborative culture where every team member truly matters.

Owned and run by husband and wife team Charlie and Lara, Charlie a vet, Lara a nurse; Cedar remains proudly independent – shaped by a shared belief that clinical freedom, teamwork and authentic connection are the heartbeat of exceptional care.

We understand the realities of the job and the importance of creating an environment where people can thrive, contribute their best work, and genuinely enjoy what they do.

Since 2019, we’ve partnered with Vets Now to provide out of hours care for our patients. This partnership emerged from genuine industry need, and while we’re grateful to work alongside such a dedicated team, we’ve always believed that the care we provide should feel seamlessly connected.

We’re now creating something special – launching a comprehensive 24-hour service within our own thriving independent practice. We’re committed to delivering the highest standards of veterinary care with continuity, compassion and fair pricing – ensuring our patients receive the nurturing support they deserve, wherever and whenever they need it.

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of something meaningful from the ground up: helping to shape and deliver an exceptional emergency nursing service, supported by a talented, values-driven team who genuinely care about making a positive difference.

The Role

You’ll be an integral part of our emergency care team, providing compassionate, high-quality nursing care to emergency and hospitalised patients overnight. You’ll work with excellent equipment and have the autonomy to use your nursing skills to their fullest potential.
You’ll have support every step of the way – working alongside our emergency vets throughout your shifts, with dedicated handover time each morning to ensure smooth continuity of care and patient wellbeing throughout their journey.
You’ll have access to digital X-ray, video endoscopy, laparoscopy, multiparameter monitoring, and everything you need to provide outstanding nursing care. Your role will include:

  • Triage and assessment of emergency patients
  • Anaesthesia induction and monitoring
  • Post-operative nursing care
  • Managing hospitalised patients overnight
  • Laboratory sample processing and diagnostic testing
  • Client communication with compassion and clarity

Experience in out of hours or emergency nursing is welcomed, though this role would equally suit an experienced day practice RVN looking to transition into emergency care. The ideal candidate will be calm under pressure, clinically thorough, and confident in their nursing abilities while valuing collaboration and open communication.

Shift patterns are flexible, and as this is a brand new service, you’ll have a genuine opportunity to help shape the rota structure to work for both you and the team. A comfortable on-site bedsit is available, with facilities for rest, study and relaxation during quieter periods.

What We Offer

Building something meaningful together:
  • Salary £35,000 – £40,000 depending on experience
  • Flexible rota pattern (e.g. 7 on / 14 off – open to discussion and your input)
  • Active involvement in shaping this new service as the team develops
  • Generous staff discount (75% fee discount, drugs at cost)
  • Funded and encouraged CPD including study support for further qualifications
  • RCVS fees paid
  • Cycle to work scheme
A supportive, values-led environment:
  • Be part of an independent practice where your voice matters and ideas are genuinely welcomed
  • Work within a collaborative team that values quality communication, mutual support, and clinical excellence
  • Contribute to delivering continuity of care that makes a real difference to patients and their families
  • Protected time for handovers and clinical discussions – because quality care requires proper communication
  • Join a practice that invests in its people, equipment and the quality of care we provide
  • Work alongside vets who value and respect your nursing expertise and clinical judgement
Work-life harmony that works for you:
  • Flexible working patterns designed with your input
  • On-site accommodation available for rest and downtime
  • Work within a psychologically safe environment with positive communication, supported by a dedicated day team.
  • Be part of a culture that genuinely respects work-life balance

Vets and Nurses have the time and are not too stressed to answer my questions and teach me. Previously at a corporate vets there were not enough qualified veterinary staff that had the time to even check in on me. I love that I get weekly check ins now with my clinical coach, this gives me time to ask questions about anything I’m stuck on from college, practice practical skills and helps me work on my onefile properly. I also appreciate the routine check ins with my line manager, this gives me reassurance I can voice anything I am concerned about and it’s received well.

Over to you…

We’re looking for a Registered Veterinary Nurse who shares our passion for high-quality, compassionate care and values meaningful collaboration. Whether you’re already experienced in out of hours nursing or you’re a confident day practice RVN looking for a new challenge that makes a genuine difference, we’d love to hear from you.

Interested?

If you’re ready to be part of something new and meaningful – helping to shape a high-quality out of hours nursing service within a supportive, independent practice – we’d genuinely love to hear from you.

Closing date for applications is Friday 12th December 2025.

The main things that stood out to me when I joined Cedars was the amazing support and how accepted I felt into the team straight away and by day 3 already felt like I had been here for a few months! The team work together really well and everyone is very supportive of helping with things your unsure on and not beating you down as well as helping you grow and supporting your own views and ideas! The long travel is absolutely worth it to feel a real part of the team and actually feel like I’m a respected nurse and not just a number 🙂
